Things are a little more optimistic today as I admire from afar the work that women are doing in Scotland.
Marion Millar appeared in court this week receiving for the first time the Crowns charges against her, the case was continued for a hearing on the 4th of October so that the compatibility of the case can be examined in relation to Ms. Millar’s human rights under the European Convention of Human Rights. The accusation against her are said to be for “homophobic” and “transphobic” tweets. These are the tweets allegedly at the centre of the case if you are curious.
The man who allegedly is the “victim” of the tweet showing the suffragette ribbon, is claiming he is fleeing Scotland for his safety.
Below is footage of the dangerous women who are making it unsafe for Scotland to become more progressive than it already is, as Ms Millar enters court.
Marion has received a lot of support from lesbian, gay, and transgender people who say that the imprisoning of mothers was not the aim of their rights movements. Many gay and transgender people claim that movements that were intended to support their needs as citizens have been hijacked to serve government and capital interests. I wrote this week that the same is true of the women’s movement.
We need to be united in our right to organise separately from each other and separately from the state’s definition of who we are.
Protests have continued in Scotland with demonstrations outside parliament in Edinborough against proposed gender self-ID laws. I found this speech from Kate Coleman from @NoXYinXXprisons particularly moving about the effects on the most vulnerable of women of playing pretendies with sex.
My thoughts, prayers, and all my feminist good vibes go to the women of Scotland, who taught us a new word (Wheesht) and who are showing us how to have some big glowing ovaries in this fight.
